Digital Studio License | Older Beginner Chord-Based All-in-One Method Book 3

Chord First is an all-in-one piano method designed for teen and adult beginners, returning students, and students who know the basics but need a more practical, chord-based approach. Recommended for ages 12 and up.

Chord First Book 3 continues building on the skills from Books 1 and 2 while taking you into more keys and more advanced chord work. You’ll learn one-octave major and minor scales, key signatures, Roman numerals, and IV and V7 chords in C, G, F, Am, Em, and Dm, while continuing to strengthen both hands and build confidence at the piano.

With a mix of classical, folk, contemporary, jazz, and blues, each piece gives you a chance to put these new skills into practice and become a more capable, independent musician, one chord at a time.

Designed for students who have completed Chord First Book 2 or who already play at a late elementary level and have some chord understanding and note reading ability.

While Book 2 focused on introducing triads and inversions, Book 3 expands chord knowledge to include Roman numerals and I-IV-V7 progressions using 3-note inversions. Rhythm is expanded to 6/8 time with more syncopation. Key signatures and one-octave scales are also introduced for C, G, and F major, as well as A, E, and D Minor.

Chord First Book 3 helps students move into a later elementary to intermediate level of playing lead sheet-style literature of all styles.

Inside this 80-page book, students will work through:

Lead Sheets
Put new chords, keys, rhythms, and accompaniment patterns to work in a wide variety of lead sheets. Guided scores provide support as new skills are introduced, while Lead Sheet pages give students more freedom to make their own musical choices.

Chords
Expand your chord vocabulary with IV and V7 chords in major and minor keys. Learn how Roman numerals show a chord’s role within a key and use these relationships to recognize familiar chord patterns in new music.

Theory
Learn to recognize major and minor key signatures and understand how scales, chords, and Roman numerals connect. Instructional pages, writing assignments, and unit reviews reinforce these concepts through the music you play.

Technique
Build fluency in C, G, F, Am, Em, and Dm with one-octave major and minor scales. Progressive technical exercises strengthen coordination and make playing across different keys feel more natural.

Creativity
Continue developing your own musical voice through composition, improvisation, and creative choices within lead sheets.
