Piano Sheet Music š¼ S P A C E [as in..the space between the notes!]
What do Impressionist and pop music have in common?
āTwo of my favorite genres to play on the piano are:
- Impressionist piano solos š¼ļø
- Piano-driven sad pop music š§ļø
What I find so compelling about both of these piano styles is...
šĀ the S P A C E in the music!Ā š
What do I mean by S P A C E ?
I mean the emotional nature of this music caused by itsĀ "room to breathe."
Here are some examples I find *spacious*:
- La cathƩdrale engloutie (The Sunken Cathedral) - Debussy
- Pavane pour une infante dƩfunte (Pavane for a Dead Princess) - Ravel
- Gymnopedies - Satie
- Glimpse of Us - Joji
- No Peace - Sam Smith
- Hope There's Someone - Antony and the Johnsons
- For Tonight - Giveon
You kind of get where I'm going with this?
Anyways, here is the piece I wrote as kind of aĀ study in spacious pop music!
This piano solo challenges the player to includeĀ spaceĀ in these aspects:
- wide intervalsĀ (creating tonal space)
- long tonesĀ (creating rhythmic space)
TheĀ most challenging partĀ about it is just having theĀ patienceĀ to let theĀ spaceĀ do its thing. [There's a life lesson in there somewhere š§]
It's at anĀ early intermediate to intermediate level, or an ambitious late elementary pianist could also tackle it if they like the sound and can reach octaves with the left hand.
I'd call this piece a Level 4.Ā Level 3B students could tackle it if they have a good reach (octaves) with their left hand.
