Music Composition Cut-and-Paste Workbook Level 3 | Late Elementary - Early Intermediate Class Workshop Curriculum for Composing a Song on the Piano | Level 3B-4

Plan a summer music composition workshop for your piano students! Composition Cut-and-Paste makes composing more fun by offering a "multiple choice" for each measure, and allowing students to get creative with guided foundational theory along the way.

Unlike the other levels of Composition Cut-and-Paste, Level 3 does NOT involve cutting and pasting!  For our older students, they'll still be choosing from multiple options, but they will be copying or writing their choices on the staff instead of cutting and gluing.

Music theory and triads are strongly enforced through Level 3 of the Composition Cut-and-Paste workbook. Students will need a good working knowledge of notes on the staff and be able to play hands together in the key of G Major. The workbook will guide students to use the Roman numeral system for naming chords in G Major (some knowledge of chord progression is helpful).

This is a full curriculum designed for piano students able to play at an Late Elementary to Early Intermediate level (Piano Adventures Level 3B* to 4). Other easier levels of Composition Cut-and-Paste are also available!

Purchase of this 44-page PDF workbook allows the buyer to a single studio or single classroom license. That means you are allowed to print the workbook for as many of your students as you would like! Please buy additional licenses for other teachers.

*For students in Piano Adventures Level 3A (or its equivalent), I recommend using Composition Cut-and-Paste Level 2 unless they are very adept at note reading in G Major and triads.

Use Composition Cut-and-Paste with:

  • a private piano student at subsequent lessons
  • a group composition ongoing weekly lesson
  • an elementary or middle school music/piano class
  • a 3- or 4-week summer composition class
Here's How Composition Cut-and-Paste Works:
1. Print the workbook double-sided and put into a 3-ring binder.
2. Students will work page-by-page with a keyboard handy to decide which combination of chords they like best.
3. Once a favorite progression is chosen, the student will write out the pattern and then copy it onto the corresponding measures on their Final Song pages.
4. By the end of the workbook, students will have two 48-measure original compositions in G Major to call their own!  (Students will compose the L.H. part only on their first piece, and then use that L.H. part in their second piece, composing the R.H. part from scratch.)

What's Included in the 44-page PDF Workbook:

  • Supplies list
  • Instructions and tips
  • Table of Contents
  • Reference Pages to help students remember the notes and chords of the G Major scale
  • 17 pages of instructional writing pages (students will be reading, playing, labeling, copying, and decision-making on these pages)
  • 2 celebration coloring pages at the end of each composition
  • 6 Final Song pages (students will be writing out their final choices for both songs on the staff on these pages)
  • 3 Blank Staff pages (optional to re-copy, brainstorm, or record fresh ideas)
