Music Composition Cut-and-Paste Workbook Level 1 | Early Elementary Class Workshop Curriculum for Composing a Song on the Piano | Level 1A-1B

Plan a summer music composition workshop for your piano students! Composition Cut-and-Paste makes composing more fun by offering a "multiple choice" for each measure, and allowing students to get crafty along the way.

Music theory and note reading are strongly enforced through Level 1 of the Composition Cut-and-Paste workbook. Students will need a good working knowledge of notes on the staff in the C Pentascale. (No sharps or flats added at this level. No position shifts.)

This is a full curriculum designed for piano students able to play at an Early Elementary level (Piano Adventures Level 1). 

Purchase of this 60-page PDF workbook allows the buyer to a single studio or single classroom license. That means you are allowed to print the workbook for as many of your students as you would like! Please buy additional licenses for other teachers.

Use Composition Cut-and-Paste with:

  • a private piano student at subsequent lessons
  • a group composition ongoing weekly lesson
  • an elementary or middle school music/piano class
  • a 3- or 4-week summer composition class

Level 1 comes in 2 separate PDF files.  Students will be creating two compositions.

  • 1A Workbook guides students to create a 16-measure song with lyrics. They will be deciding the right hand melody in 2-measure segments. The left hand will be done for them.
  • 1B Workbook guides students to create a second 12-measure song.  This time they will be deciding both the right hand and left hand notes for each individual measure. 
  • Use the easier workbook (1A) or the more challenging workbook (1B) or both!
Here's How Composition Cut-and-Paste Works:
1. Print the workbook double-sided and put into a 3-ring binder.
2. Students will work page-by-page with a keyboard handy to decide which combination of notes/measure they like best.
3. Once a favorite measure is chosen, the student will cut out the corresponding labeled measure on the Cut-Out page and glue or tape it to the corresponding blank measure on the Paste page.
4. By the end of the 1A workbook, students will have a two-page, 16-measure original composition to call their own!  And by the end of the 1B workbook, students will have an additional one-page, 12-measure original composition to be proud of!
